We’re often celebrated for the bold moves we did make.
But today, I want to talk about the ones we didn’t. The “almost” moments.
The job you turned down.
The relocation you postponed.
The startup idea you shelved.
The conversation you never initiated.
For me, it was an offer from a high profile company early in my career, prestigious title, impressive package, global scope. On paper, it checked every box, but something didn’t sit right, so I declined.
At the time, it felt risky, doubt crept in.
Did I just walk away from the opportunity of a lifetime?
Years later, I look back and realize:
That “no” shaped my trajectory more powerfully than some of my biggest “yeses.”
It taught me:
- Clarity beats prestige
- Gut instincts deserve respect
- Success isn’t just what you gain, but what you protect
We rarely talk about the opportunities we don’t take, but those decisions carry weight, and wisdom.
They shape who we become just as much as the ones we pursue.
So here’s a question I’m reflecting on, and I invite you to do the same:
What’s one opportunity you didn’t take, and how did it shape your career for the better?
Let’s give voice to the almosts, they might just be our most defining moments
